We regularly review our performance and report our progress and ensure that this policy remains relevant to the needs of stakeholders and the environment. While we hold our leaders accountable for the safety of our people and expect our managers and supervisors to provide effective leadership in safety, health and the environment, we equally expect all individuals to be responsible for their own safety and the safety of others. This requires the allocation of appropriate resources and the provision of training, education, consultation, audits and monitoring to ensure compliance. 1889: James Thompson sets up a building and carpentry business in Durban. 1908: James Thompson becomes mayor of Johannesburg at which time he was already the largest building contractor in town. 1930: James Thompson’s sons, James Jr. and Mark join the business. At this stage, Thompson has established branches in all the major cities in South Africa. 1934: James Jr. takes over from his father and one of the first major projects under his new leadership is the construction of Anglo American's headquarters at 44 Main Street, Johannesburg. He settles in Durban and starts his own steel reinforcing and fixing business called The Concrete Construction Company. It is not long before the company is awarded its first major contract for the construction of a dam for Rand Leases, a gold mine on the West Rand. The company expands into Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Tanzania. 1962: Thompson forms a roads and earthworks company and business expands into Africa. It is during this year that LTA is formed and listed on the JSE. 1970's: Both companies enjoy boom times and show significant growth. 2000: Anglo American disposing of its non-core assets which results in the sale of its interest in LTA to Aveng. This acquisition is an important step to Aveng's vision to broaden its construction footprint into the developing world.
